A PLACE TO GATHER

A little shade.
A reason to stay.

Start with where you sit, when you use the patio and how the structure will fit the house. Then discuss the design, material and site work.

COMPARE THE LOOK & UPKEEP

Choose the material for your pergola.

Start with the look you like, then compare the finish, upkeep and structure. These materials and systems are offered around DFW; we’ll confirm which options fit your project and our installation scope during estimating.

Western red cedar

Warm natural grain; compare the actual grade and stain.

Pressure-treated pine

Treatment and finish affect the appearance.

Powder-coated aluminum

Compare the system’s available colors and profiles.

Douglas fir

Ask how specified structural members are protected.

Composite system

A manufactured product; confirm its structural design.

Vinyl system

Confirm the supporting frame and product specification.

START WITH THE SUN AND YOUR SEATING

Shade where you sit.
Space where you move.

An open pergola filters light; it does not give the same shelter as a solid roof. Plan for the time of day you’ll use the space and the shade you actually want.

Follow the sun

Look at morning and afternoon exposure before choosing the position and roof approach.

Make room around the posts

Keep doors, furniture and the route to the yard comfortable to use.

Choose the roof separately

Discuss open slats, any proposed adjustable system or a covered structure as different options with different requirements.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

Pergola installation questions

How much does a pergola cost in Plano?
Size is only part of the price. Materials, spans, footing requirements, access, finish and any patio or electrical work also matter. Send your address, a photo and a rough size if you know it. Your written estimate should separate the structure from any patio work, lighting or other improvements.
Will a pergola give my patio enough shade?
An open slatted roof provides filtered shade that moves as the sun moves. A west-facing patio can still receive low afternoon sun beneath the roof. Show us where you sit and when you use the space so placement and shade expectations can be discussed together. Read our pergola planning guide.
Is a pergola waterproof?
A traditional open-top pergola lets rain through. If staying dry is essential, say so at the start: a covered structure is a different design and scope. Don’t assume a roof can simply be added later without checking the structure and approval requirements.
Can you build a pergola over my existing patio?
That may be possible, but an existing patio isn’t automatically a suitable structural foundation. Its condition, post locations, anchorage and required footings need to be assessed. Plan any patio repair or replacement together with the pergola.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval in Plano?
Confirm the requirements for your exact structure with Plano Building Inspections before construction. Attached and freestanding structures can be reviewed differently, and size or configuration may affect requirements. The city’s patio-cover checklist describes site plans, structural details and other submittals. HOA approval is a separate check.
Can we plan lighting and landscaping at the same time?
Yes. Discuss landscape lighting, seating, paths and planting early, so post locations and access suit the whole space. See our Outdoor Living page for projects that combine several features.
Do I need drawings before requesting an estimate?
No. Photos, your address and a description of how you want to use the space are enough to start the conversation. A simple layout sketch can help with planning; any permit drawings or engineering needed for construction must be identified separately.
